Wrought Iron Gates

Wrought iron is characterised by its low carbon content, which makes it more malleable and easier to shape than cast iron or steel. However, the manufacturing process to achieve this is quite labour intensive, which leads to wrought iron being more expensive than mild steel.

Wrought iron has a more rustic texture, which is why it has been, and continues to be, popular as the gate of choice at more traditional properties such as cottages and farm houses, where a gate is required but one which does not obscure the natural beauty of a garden or countryside behind it. Due to its malleable properties many wrought iron gates are more ornate in their design, to provide both a see-through gate and one which itself provides an interesting and visually subtle decorative feature which complements the overall feel of a property.

Metal Driveway Gates

Compared to entrance and side garden gates, metal driveway gates need to be a more considered purchase. Clearly as bigger gates they will be a more expensive proposition than metal garden gates, but being bigger also means that these gates will be much heavier and as a result will need a suitable, secure means of fixing to a rigid point.

Since a wider area will be covered when opening and closing the gates, the angle and slope of the ground around this area may mean that a sliding or folding gate is a more practical option. To account for a slope with a traditional pair of hinged swinging metal gates requires a skewing of the hinge positions. This will generally mean a bigger gap between hinge and gate at either the top or bottom, depending on which way the gate slopes, which will make the gates look less than perfectly symmetrical when closed.

Both hinged and sliding gates can be automated, although this is more common for sliding gates. We can build sliding gates in preparation for automation as a future upgrade if budgets don't allow for full automation from day one.

Composite Gates

Virtually all composite gates will have a metal frame to support and enclose the composite fence panels. As well as providing a practical purpose, the metal around composite provides an aesthetic enhancement, which can be taken to another level by adding toppings such as those used for metal railings or full metal gates. Composite trellises can also be built into the gates to provide even more interest and personalisation to your composite gate.

Whilst most people instinctively add a trellis to the top of a gate, our metalwork team can frame these to go anywhere in the gate, or in several places.

Metal Framed Wooden Gates

Our metal framed wooden gates follow pretty much the same build process from a metalwork perspective as our composite gates. Very simply, the composite is replaced by timber or, in many more cases these days, wood effect. Whilst a number of customers initially request authentic timber, when we visit we also show our wood effect composite range, and for some customers this ticks the box. They get the look they want without worrying about maintenance, and in many cases it is more cost effective than timber.

Either way we can make wooden side gates, garden gates and of course metal framed timber driveway gates.

Generally speaking, when going for metal framed timber driveway gates you will want a timber with high durability and resistance to weathering. This will not be the same timber that is used in fencing and off-the-shelf garden side gates, which are normally made of pine or similar softwood. For driveway gates, popular choices include hardwoods such as oak, and naturally durable softwoods such as cedar and redwood. The choice will depend on a combination of the natural aesthetics and shade of the different woods and of course their respective pricing. As a number of these are imported, high quality woods, you should expect to pay substantially more than for a composite equivalent. However, regardless of your choice, we can provide the perfect frame for your wooden gates.

Most of the different types of ground-based metal railings can be used on garden walls. Obviously the biggest difference will be the overall height and the method of fixing to the wall.

Generally there are two main types of garden wall railings: those that run all the way across the top of a wall, either brick or stone, and those that are fitted on top of a section of wall that runs between a set of pillars.

When fabricating metal wall railings that run between pillars, rather than a run which is simply cut at the appropriate length, they will be made as a panel. This is much neater, and each panel is finished off at each end so that a vertical section of railing can be attached to secure the railings to the pillar, as well as to the top of the wall, to provide a secure fixing.

Metal Garden Fencing

Metal garden fencing is often interchanged with metal railings, as many people will simply use either term when talking about fencing in a domestic environment.

There are some companies who provide solid metal garden fences, and these can be either steel or aluminium, but these are simply pre-manufactured sheets of metal, often corrugated to provide some additional dimension. This is still quite uncommon, with many more people choosing composite fencing as an alternative to wood where a solid fence is sought after.

Our metal fencing will essentially be some form of metal railings. However, as we manufacture these on a bespoke basis, we can vary almost anything. If you have particularly small dogs, we can add additional horizontal bars and narrow the space between vertical metal bars to provide a safe enclosure for pets.

We can carry out a few different metal gate restoration services which can have your existing metal gates looking like new again, such as our professional repairs and repainting service. The best way to do this, and the most effective in terms of getting them looking like new again, is to remove them and get them shot blasted. By shot blasting, small particles of grit are propelled with force at the surface of the metal. This will remove the existing paint and rust and provide a clean and smooth surface for any welding repairs to be done, before finally powder coating.

Of course, the much cheaper option is to simply get some metal paint and paint over any irregularities, but this is very much a band-aid approach. It will not look good, and is likely to need redoing again very soon, as you will be masking over, rather than addressing and repairing, the underlying metalwork surface issues.
